Ukraine's Zelensky says he has 'cooled' on joining NATO and is open to discussions about control of Russian-backed separatist regions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he had "cooled down" about Ukraine's bid to join NATO amid Russia's war with the Eastern European country.

"Regarding NATO, I have cooled down regarding this question long ago after we understood that NATO is not prepared to accept Ukraine," Zelensky told ABC News in an exclusive interview that aired Monday night.

Well it now looks like this war may soon be over. The Ukrainian people put up a gallant fight. But when you're beat, you're beat.

Putin seems intent on exterminating Ukraine as a nation if Zelensky doesn't surrender. Russian bombs are now falling on Ukrainian hospitals. Some Ukrainian cities are without electricity, heat, food, and even water. Human beings cannot survive very long under those conditions. The only choice at this point is for Ukraine to surrender, before millions of innocent people are killed.

It's not an unconditional surrender or Russian takeover. Russia has taken a hard hit from this war, with thousands of Russian soldiers killed and harsh economic sanctions against them from many countries. Most Russians want to get this over with as well.

Whether or not Putin will eventually be tried for war crimes remains to be seen. How soon the economic sanctions are lifted also remains to be seen. I would think that world leaders would expect Russia to pay for the damage they inflicted, or many of the sanctions would remain in place for quite some time.
